Corporate Rowing - Accept the Challenge! The Townsville Rowing Club took the Corporate Rowing Challenge of 2006 to a whole new level as the premier sporting event in the region’s corporate calendar, with over 120 participants. Rowing is one of the ultimate team sports, and the aim of Corporate Rowing is to develop strong teams and build individual and team competitive focus. It is also about developing new skills, building relationships and enjoying a relaxed atmosphere for networking and meeting people across the Townsville business community. Business managers keen to develop their competitive edge are quick to recognise the value of crew rowing as a team-building and networking opportunity. Operating since 1999, Corporate Rowing has now become Townsville’s no.1 networking and team building event: hosting one of the largest events on the corporate calendar, Townsville Rowing Club will provide your "crew" with the experience the excitement of being part of a truly cohesive team. With accredited coaching staff, rowing equipment and catering supplied by the club, the only thing your "crew" needs to contribute is the desire to win! Accept the Challenge – get your "crew" together to participate in Corporate Rowing 2007, at the club’s training and competition course on Aplin’s Weir, The Ross River: Please contact the Corporate Rowing Representative if you would like to know more about this unique corporate opportunity - click here for the 2008 Corporate Rowing brouchure. The following corporate “crews" took up the challenge for 2007:
On Sunday 23rd October there was a mini-regatta: a chance for the crews to try their hand at racing and for the "handicapper" (Head Coach ..... ) to see who is where in the field of eight crews ..... handicaps make the Regatta Day all the more interesting during the round robin race-offs .... with the season being only five weeks long the Corporate Challenge is a crash course learning to row, teamwork, race day preparation, and dealing with the "race" itself. The Corporate Challenge Regatta is on Saturday 13th October at the Townsville RC Boathouse and the Aplin's Weir section of the Ross River. If previous years are any indication, the regatta day will be a fun filled day with much corporation rivalry on the water (how may sheep-stations will be won and lost on the day .... ?); close racing; silly antics both on and off the water; and the appearance of the occasional fancy dress crew (check out the photos of the previous three years). With eight crews competing for the three trophies on offer, the race off for each trophy division will be cut-throat during the morning of the round-robin races over 750 meters; with the cut for each division being time based. The finals will be raced over the 'full Masters distance" of 1000 meters. 2007 Townsville Corporate Mini-Regatta On Sunday 23rd October, seven of the eight Crews ventured down the boathouse for a series of “fun races” over 250 meters. With a strong afternoon breeze blowing down the course, the times were always going to be fast – one crew broke the “one minute mark” over the short race distance! The day was chance for the crews to gain a little insight to racing after only two weeks of training. Several crews and their coaches took the day very seriously, while for most it was fun to see the other crews racing and to also have few drinks and start some business to business networking – or was it “professional sledging” that was being yelled out as encouragement to racing crews …. ? Several crews proudly racing in their team uniforms – will be hard to miss the NSS crew in their loud orange shirts with matching socks ……. whilst WRG looked like the “All Blacks” in their matching black shirts and caps. Racing results aside, it was a fun and relaxing afternoon on the banks of the Ross River with a BBQ and a few beers ….. Results
