Club Activities

Social Rowing – incorporating Learn-2-Row (L2R)

There is a very active social rowing scene within the club – The Sunday Social Sessions. These sessions are for the more social rower who wants some coaching and basic workload in the boat. Sessions are open to any member, and often more experienced Club Members act as coaches and even row on occasion.

  • Learn-2-Row (L2R)

The club holds Learn-2-Row (L2R) programs throughout the year to enable new rowers to learn the basics of rowing prior to committing to full membership. The programs are limited to two supervised sessions per weekend over a four to six week period.

For more information, please contact the Head Coach.

  • Social Activities & Rowing Day/Nights

Throughout the year the Club hosts many social activities: two of the most popular activites are the regular "Big Boat Nights" and "Glowing Rowing" ...

Big Boat Nights - these are often held during quiet times between regattas and are well attended by all members: crews are selected by the “name out of a hat” method with scant regard to abilities, age, gender, or which side you row (these nights are always held in eights) and “racing” between crews begins in earnest over 500 meters. These nights are always concluded with drinks and nibbles on the banks of the Ross River as the sun sets over another glorious day in tropical Townsville ….

Glowing Rowing - this is held once a year (usually in early/mid December) and is a great excuse to have fun towards Christmas - various boats are decorated with Christmas Tree lights the length of the boat and around the riggers, and the rowers attach glow-sticks to themselves and the many family members who are part of the fun of the night .... once the boats and rowers are suitably "lit up", crews are boated and row of in to the sunset for a great social row .... as light fades glowing "christmas tree" boats and rowers are seen gliding along the Ross River, and must be a strange sight for those walking along the river banks .... as usual, such an event would not complete with a BBQ and some drinks afterwards ....

All the social activites are family oriientated with many partners and children being part of the fun of the occasion.  For photos of all the fun, click here

Club Regatta Series - after an absence of many years, in the second half of 2008, T&JCU will resume the C;lub Regatta Series: a series of intra Club regattas spaced out over the second half of the year.  Each 'regatta' will be in a different class of boat, with points for racing awared to each competing rower, and an end of year award for the higest male & female pointscore.

Corporate Rowing

Business managers keen to develop their competitive edge are quick to recognise the value of crew rowing as a team-building and networking opportunity. The Club hosts one of the largest events on the corporate calendar to provide your "crew" with the experience and excitement of being part of a truly cohesive team. With accredited coaching staff, rowing equipment and catering supplied by the club, the only thing your crew needs to contribute is the desire to win.

Please contact the Corporate Rowing Representative or visit the Corporate Rowing page if you would like to know more about this unique corporate opportunity.

Schools Program

There is a very active schools program in Townsville comprising of six local schools governed by the Townsville All Schools Rowing Association - TASRA

Competition Rowing

Under the guidance of the Head Coach, a structured skill development and competition training program is available for all members to participate in, including attendance at variety of regattas: The Townsville & JCU RC Point Score Country Premiership Regatta; various Country Regattas from Cairns to Bundaberg, and various State and National Regattas. For more in formation, please contact the Head Coach. Competition Rowing is broadly operates via the following programs (all the below programs has a small non-competitive group with in the program):

  • The Townsville Talent Capture Program – TTCP

New in 2007 for the NQ region, this exciting program is the initiative of the Australian Sports Commission and Rowing Queensland Incorporated and fully supported by the Australian Institute of Sport and Queensland Academy of Sport rowing programs.

This is a unique opportunity for talented 17 > 22 year olds to take the next step from school/club programs in to selection for Youth and Under 23 crews.

Supported by both the Townsville RC and Riverway RC, this program is an unbridled opportunity for the best in the NQ region to take their rowing in to the elite ranks.

The TTCP is headed up by Corby Green, with support from local coaches in the region.

Keep up to date with the happenings of the TTCP via the RQI web page, or the Slipstream Newsletter (see below).

Running parrallel to the TTCP, Coby manages a monthly newsletter targeted at Youth Rowing in the North Queensland Region - Slipstream.  Click here to sign-up to the mailing list for Slipstream, or goto the latest Slipstream Newsletter.

Ted Hale Boats are a major contributor to the program with the provision of a selection of racing boats to assist in the development of the potential elite athletes; this generous contribution will compliment the existing equipment in the region made available by both Townsville RC and Riverway RC.

  • Townsville Youth Row

This initiative of the Townsville RC and the TTCP Head Coach (Corby Green) will provide a dual opportunity for school leavers to make the transition from school rowing or as a stepping stone to be noticed on the radar of the TTCP Head Coach

Open to all school leavers and members under 23, this “young-guns” group will be provided the opportunity to be as competitive or as social as your ability to commit allows; regular coached sessions; regular testing to monitor your improvement in both skills and strength/endurance; regular attendance at a variety of regattas ranging from local club events to championship regattas; social interaction and fun as a squad out of the boat.

One aspect of this program is to develop crews within the Under 23 age bracket and whose target is representing Townsville RC at the QLD State Championships as the “Force from the North” ….

  • Townsville Seniors

For the slightly older serious or social rower, the Townsville Seniors is both a mixture of structured training and regular competition (both local and farther abroad). Linked closely with the Townsville Youth Row, traveling as a Team to away regattas is as much about the fun to be had on an “away game” as is the racing on the day …. and the fun recounting the days racing over dinner or a few drinks ….

  • Townsville Masters Rowing

The Masters rowing scene in Townsville is one of the strongest Masters Sports in the NQ Region.

Masters Rowing is one of the stalwart aspects of the structure of the T&JCU RC; the Masters are just as competitive and serious about their training and racing as the younger members …. some more so! Many of the Masters are the Committee Members that guide the club forward, and their continued impressive results at regattas are the corner stone of our reputation of being a strong and fiercely competitive club.

Open to all aged above 27 and of any ability, this squad is as serious as it is social and welcoming. Structured training and regular coaching ensure preparation for any level of regatta attended and also provides continued opportunities to experience the real enjoyment of rowing with in a well tuned and harmonious team.

  • Townsville & JCU Rowing Club Regatta

T&JCU RC hold their annual Regatta on the Queens Birthday weekend in June each year.  This regatta is the largest in numbers attending and seats raced in the North Queensland Region (Mackay through to Cairns); and the regatta in 2008 was no exception with over 130 competitors racing in all classes of boats covering over 700 seats entered! - raced over one and a half days with a race every 10 minutes and most races using all four lanes, this was a weekend regatta to be remembered.  As well as Clubs from the region, Townsville Grammar School and The Cathedral School entered multipule crews, often in Club races as an added challenge above the usual school regatta season.
